Pyotr Veniaminovich Svidler is a Russian chess grandmaster and commentator, born on June 17, 1976, in St. Petersburg. In 1991 Peter split 1st-3rd place at the World U16 Championship, and by 1994, he was both a world U18 champion and a grandmaster. He went on to become an eight-time Russian Chess Champion (1994, 1995, 1997, 2003, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2017), something no one else has achieved a hat-trick in modern times. He has represented Russia at the Chess Olympiad ten times (1994–2010; 2014), winning five team gold medals, two team silvers, and an individual bronze.
