Defending the total, Mumbai Indians bowlers were taken to the cleaners, but they held their nerves and produced a hat-trick of run-outs in the 19th over to seal the win.
During the post-match presentation ceremony, Hardik Pandya confessed that DC batter Karun Nair sent shockwaves through MI camp with his batting. He said:
“Winning is always special, especially wins like this. He (Karun) was batting brilliantly, it seemed like it was going out of hand.”
Hardik Pandya further lauded Karn Sharma for his Player of the Match performance against DC. He asserted:
“(On Karn Sharma) Shows great character, to be brave and toss it up when the boundaries are just 60m long.”
We never gave up – Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya also lauded his teammates saying that they never gave up and put their hands up to contribute to the win. He stated:
“We never gave up, we kept saying we want to stay in the contest. Everyone put their hand up and we were able to hold on to our chances.”
Hardik Pandya, at last, talked about the batting order of the Mumbai Indians and revealed the chat during the end overs of the thrilling match. He stated:
“(On the batting order) Wanted to get the players in form to face the most balls. Dew played a big factor later on, it got very dewy. Just by making sure the game is not over, “keep fighting” was the chatter. We knew a couple of wickets would change the game. It has happened with me before as well, wins like this change the momentum and turn everything around.”
How did MI perform in the previous IPL match against DC?
Mumbai Indians put up a great fight in their previous IPL clash against Delhi Capitals but eventually lost the match by 10 runs while chasing 258 in Delhi.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. The decision backfired heavily as they ended up conceding 257 runs in 20 overs as the Delhi Capitals batters went berserk at home.
Jasprit Bumrah, Luke Wood, Piyush Chawla, and Mohammad Nabi got one wicket each in the innings as Mumbai Indians managed to pick just four wickets.
Chasing a daunting target, MI faced early setbacks but stayed in the game until the final over, thanks to the efforts of Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Tim David.
MI lost Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav inside the powerplay and were reduced to 65/3 in six overs. However, Hardik Pandya slammed a blazing 46 off 24 balls, while Tilak Varma smashed 63 off 32 balls. The pair added 71 runs off just 34 deliveries.
Then, Tim David showcased his batting prowess with a 17-ball 37, but MI’s chase was derailed by DC pacers who picked wickets at regular intervals and stopped MI to 247/9.
