Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has sent a strong warning to his teammates following the team’s statement win against Liverpool.
United edge Liverpool
Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire scored in either half to secure United a first victory at Anfield since 2016.
Liverpool’s sole goal was bagged by Cody Gakpo, who had struck the post twice before he eventually got on the score sheet to restore parity.
Fernandes played a key role in both strikes. He started the move for the opener, passing the ball to Amad, who then found Mbeumo’s run.
The skipper also delivered a sublime ball that Maguire was all too happy to head home and seal the three points for United.
Despite the celebrations following what Ruben Amorim hailed as his biggest win since taking charge of the club, Fernandes stressed the importance of maintaining momentum, beginning with next weekend’s fixture against Brentford.
He warned that anything less would see criticism return to him and his teammates.
Fernandes fires warning
Fernandes told DAZN Portugal [as quoted by O Jogo], “It was a very important game. We obviously needed this win to get closer to the top spots. It was very important to win against a team that needed to win, and we also used that impatience to make them make some mistakes.”
“We were very effective in the first half and then dropped back a bit in the second half, but we were resilient, we knew how to work, and we got the second goal in the end.”
Asked what he told his teammates in the dressing room, Fernandes explained, “Today is for celebrating and enjoying the moment. I’ll start thinking about it [the next game] tomorrow, because the focus has to quickly shift from today and move on to next week.”
“Winning today is very nice, but if we don’t win next week, it will be a dark cloud again. It’s difficult to maintain a beautiful sky in Manchester.”
On whether the first half at Anfield was the best in recent memory, he explained, “We were very aggressive, we started playing from there and we knew they push a lot of players forward, but then they leave a lot of space open and we were effective on the counterattacks, with very fast players.”
“We’re very happy.”
United lie in ninth place in the table and two points adrift of the Champions League spots.
