Adam Silver received a letter on Friday from members of Congress requesting a briefing on the NBA’s ongoing gambling scandal by October 31. The bipartisan letter from the House Committee on Energy and Commerce followed a day after Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier and Damon Jones were arrested in two separate federal gambling investigations.
The letter stated illegal sports betting based on non-public information in the NBA “is not a new problem,” referencing former NBA referee Tim Donaghy pleading guilty to federal charges for using insider information to bet on games he officiated in 2007.
The letter also called out the NBA for previously clearing Rozier of wrongdoing from the March 2023 game.
The committee has requested the NBA address five specific areas: whether the league’s Code of Conduct effectively prohibits illegal activity; the disclosure of non-public information for illegal betting purposes; planned actions to limit such disclosures; and whether the NBA is reevaluating its partnerships with sports betting companies.
