Following the kick-off of our Miami Dolphins roster purge this past week, I pointed out that the team also had a decision to make on star running back De’Von Achane as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. I then asked the following question:
What do you think that the new coaching staff and front office should do with De’Von Achane going forward? Should they extend him right now/before the season begins, should they allow him to play on the final year of his deal before deciding if they want to re-sign him to a new deal, or should they consider trading a player that they took in the third round who could now garner a first-round draft pick?
Below are some of your thougths and answers-
NeenerWhacker wonders what a change in coaching and scheme will have on Achanes numbers in 2026.
Side note on Achane: his stats and analytics are off the charts. How much credit are we going to give Mike McDaniel for Achane’s success?
There is a high probability that Achane regresses next year with a new play caller. McD had his flaws, but he knew how to scheme for Devon
MiamiItaliano says trade him away if he doesn’t give the Dolphins a generous hometown discount on any extension.
If they get Malik Willis, that might take touches away from Achane since he’s a run first type of QB. Also, Achane might want too much money. Maybe trade him if he doesn’t agree to a team friendly contract. I don’t want him to go, but it’s better than him holding out throughout training camp.
Oldfinfan says he’s the best since Ricky and is a building block, not trade bait.
Best Dolphins player we have seen since Ricky Williams. We do not trade him, we build around him. He has game breaking abilities you don’t just find every draft.
krammm is out on him, it seems.
Trade him. He never wins the big game.
FLexile seems to have two arguments for you.
Extend him. If he is not the fastest guy in the NFL, he’s top 3. He can score ANY time he touches the ball.
Come trade deadline, do the best thing for both parties and trade him. The Dolphins get a 1st rounder and Achane gets a ring and a Super Bowl MVP for whatever team is an electric RB away from a Lombardi trophy.
SuperG! says extend him unless someone offers a first, and maybe more, for him.
Could he garner a first-round pick? I’ve been told by super smart people on here that teams don’t offer a first round pick in a trade scenario for a running back. Especially a running back on the final year of his rookie contract. A first and a third would be considered a Godfather deal. Other than that, I wouldn’t trade him. I’d extend him instead.
go_canes who has a VERY solid screen name, says keep him because seeing him play is worth the admission!
The guy is one of those rare “worth the price of admission” players. I hope they keep him in a Dolphin uniform. It is worth the risk. There is also a risk to the complete tank approach – you could develop a loser mentality.
USMCFinzFreak lays out a 2-3 year plan for the team.
Gotta keep Achane. For 2026:
1) Build the trenches through the draft.
2) Obtain competent WRs and TEs.
3) Get a bridge quarterback (I still have hope in Ewers).
2027:
Once those pieces are in place, go and get a young quarterback (if Ewers doesn’t cut the mustard).
MIAMI235 believes it comes down to affordability.
If he stays healthy, a dynamic presence, when utilized properly. As others have stated, it may simply comedown too affordability.
davidson11 says if Tua’s gone, then just clean house.
If they’re not going to keep Tua, they might as well trade Achane and Waddle. Either tank or don’t.
finfanfromsiam believes in the build via the draft concept.
Very good player that we drafted. Extend him to a decent contract. Keep our own when possible.
Monix22 wants him traded based on an assumption of future injury.
Trade him. Let him get hurt on another team.
UpInPensacola wants to make it a package deal. Might be the only way to get a good package in return for Tua.
Is it possible to trade him in a deal where Tua goes with him?
PA phinphan say’s the idea of a team-friendly deal is unlikely, so maybe look for a first for him in trade.
To me this is tough decision. I would love to keep him on a team friendly deal but is that even a thing anymore? It seems like it’s all about making as much as you can with little loyalty. I get it. It’s like any other business.
With that said, if he could bring a first round pick maybe it’s best to trade him and give the new regime more picks to build their type of roster.
The Earl is a man of few words.
Extend him.
Well, that’s our random 15 comments this evening. It seems there is no consensus on what should happen with Achane going forward, which means whatever happens with him will make some portion of the fan base unhappy. As always, thank you to each of you who took the time to join in on our question of the day and contribute to this and the prior post.
