Our 2025 MyGolfSpy Mini Driver Test helps us see that all mini drivers don’t play the same role. Some are built to replace your driver. Some are safer off the tee. Some work off the deck. Your best choice depends on how you plan to use it.
Below is the simplest way to pick the right mini driver based on what you need it to do.
If you want a true driver replacement
Pick the model that keeps driver-like distance without driver-like dispersion.
TaylorMade R7 Quad was the clearest “driver replacement” in our test: longest total distance (268.01), lowest spin (2,866 rpm) and one of the tightest dispersions (shot area 3,881). If you’re trying to swap your driver out, this is the cleanest fit.
If you want the most forgiving tee club
If your priority is keeping outcomes consistent from the tee box, you want the model with the strongest forgiveness profile.
Callaway Elyte Mini led the test for forgiveness (8.8) with strong accuracy (8.5) but it spun the most (3,136 rpm) which helps explain why it wasn’t the longest. This is the choice when “in play” matters more than squeezing out a few extra yards.
If you want accuracy first
“Accuracy first” means most repeatable start lines, playable misses and shot-shaping abilities.
Titleist GT280 ranked near the top for accuracy (8.6) and forgiveness (8.7) even though it finished last in distance off the tee. If you play tighter courses, hate penalty shots or don’t need max yardage, GT280 is the safer fit.
If you want to hit it off the turf
When testing mini drivers, we also looked at their effectiveness when hit off the deck. Three models hit 70 percent or more “playable” success rates off the turf: R7 Quad (72 percent), PXG Secret Weapon (71), GT280 (70). If you want your mini driver to be a real 3-wood alternative, start here.
If you want distance above everything
Most golfers looking for distance above everything are going with a traditional driver and not a mini. If, for some reason, the regular driver isn’t a fit for you or you can’t maximize distance with it, then the R7 Quad or PXG Secret Weapon could be a good choice.
The PXG gave up some forgiveness (8.0) so it’s more “distance potential” than “automatic fairway finder.”
Quick rule to keep in mind
Before you pick a model, decide which job you want it to do. Why are you putting the mini driver in the bag?
- Driver replacement: prioritize total distance + tight shot area
- Fairway finder: prioritize forgiveness + accuracy scores
- Dual-use club: prioritize off-turf success rate first
- Distance tool: prioritize distance score and accept tradeoffs
