Frances Tiafoe is officially back in a hard-court final. In a grueling semifinal encounter at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, Tiafoe displayed defiance to defeat compatriot Brandon Nakashima, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, improving his head-to-head record to 6-1 and reaching his 11th career ATP final.
The victory marks Tiafoe’s first final appearance on hard courts since his runner-up performance in Cincinnati in August 2024.
The path to Saturday had been anything but straightforward. Just days ago, the American was on the verge of exit, saving two match points against Aleksandar Kovacevic in the Round of 16 to keep his tournament hopes alive.
The semifinal against Nakashima followed a similar script. After dropping the first set, Tiafoe found himself staring at defeat with Nakashima serving for the match at 6-3, 6-5. In a stunning turn of momentum, Tiafoe broke back to force a tiebreak and eventually took the match into a decider.
Reflecting on the comeback, Tiafoe noted that it felt like the stars definitely aligned and things started to make sense when he was down, aided by a couple of net cords that helped him flip the script on Nakashima late in the second. He admitted he wasn’t feeling his best but focused on competing and battling, acknowledging that sometimes you get lucky before playing great tennis in the third.
“The stars definitely aligned,” Tiafoe said. “Things started to make sense when I was down, a couple of net cords. I made every return at 5-6 [in the second set]. Obviously not feeling the best, but just competing and battling — sometimes you get lucky. Played great tennis in the third.
“Never say die. I was ready to empty the tank and see what happens.”
In that final set, Tiafoe surged to a double-break lead, but Nakashima refused to go quietly. The younger American broke back for 3-5 and held for 4-5, forcing Tiafoe to serve it out under immense pressure.
Standing between Tiafoe and the trophy is Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, who mirrored Tiafoe’s grit in his own semifinal. Facing Miomir Kecmanovic, Cobolli won the opening set but found himself trailing 1-3 in the deciding set against the seemingly indefatigable Kecmanovic, who had toppled No.1-seeded Alexander Zverev earlier in the week for his first career Top-5 win.
The Italian fought back to secure a three-set victory and reach his first final on Mexican soil.
“We played an incredible match,” said Cobolli. “I’m really happy to be in the final for the first time here in Mexico. I think we both played an amazing match. I was a little bit lucky at the end, because at the crucial points sometimes you need luck. I’m really proud of myself because it wasn’t easy to come back.”
With both finalists having survived significant scares this week, Saturday’s showdown promises a battle between two of the tour’s most determined competitors.
