Ron MacLean: “Okay, what about Austin Matthews, that would have been big. Because you had a funny you say on 32 Thoughts: The podcast, to Kyle. Somebody who you say is a source that is kind of ace said San Jose. Matthews.”
Friedman: “Yeah. So, just want to explain it. Well the day was really boring yesterday before it really heated up at the end. Someone just sent that to me, and someone who’s very good, said Matthews to San Jose. I’ve almost got a heart attack, because you don’t do that. And he’s laughing and just kidding.
NHL Rumors: St. Louis Blues, New Jersey Devils, and the San Jose Sharks
But look, I heard you guys in the first intermission talk about how Matthews looks, and how much this, how tough this is right now. And I just think that at the end of the season. Like, first of all, 0.0 he was getting dealt, dealt at the deadline.
But I think at the end of the season, they’re going to sit down and have a conversation with him. And it might actually not be right at the end of the year, they might wait like a little bit to see how everything unfolds and what they decide to do, and where they stand and where everything was going.
But you know, the one thing that a couple people remind me of this week was, he signed his current extension in August of 2023. But it was a year before, two years before he could even hit unprotected free agency. The Maple Leafs went down to meet with him in the summer. And, like the one thing that he told them at that time, as long as it didn’t go off the rails, he was staying.
And the one thing that they feel very comfortable as an organization is, is that Matthews will not like in any way put them in a bad spot. If there’s any reason to think that there’s anything negative going on here in terms of his future, he’s going to let them know.
And but right now, at this point in time, I don’t think there’s, he, I don’t think he’s given them any indication that he’s unhappy or wants to go anywhere.”
NHL Rumors: Jeff Skinner, San Jose Sharks, and the Vancouver Canucks
Ron MacLean: “And you were spitballing with Matthew Nyes as well. Anything on that?”
Friedman: “No. I’m, not, not that I can tell.”
