IPL 2026 [WATCH]: Tilak Varma’s spectacular catch on the boundary line removes Vaibhav Suryavanshi during RR vs MI clash

The 13th match of the IPL 2026 season at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati lived up to its reputation for high-octane drama. In a contest truncated by rain to 11 overs per side, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) asserted their dominance with a 27-run victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI). While the scoreboard tells a tale of batting pyrotechnics, the moment that set social media ablaze was a piece of individual brilliance in the field by Tilak Varma, providing a rare highlight for the struggling Mumbai outfit.

Tilak Varma grabs a sensational boundary-line screamer to send back Vaibhav Suryavanshi

The game was played at a breakneck pace, but nothing was faster than the hands of Tilak Varma in the fifth over of the first innings. Rajasthan’s teenage sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, was in the middle of a murderous rampage, having raced to 39 off just 14 deliveries at a staggering strike rate of 278.57. With five towering sixes already in his kitty, Suryavanshi looked set to post a historic total.

On the final ball of the fifth over (4.6), Shardul Thakur bowled a full delivery wide outside off-stump. Suryavanshi, looking to exploit the gap, laced the ball with immense power toward the deep cover boundary. The shot was hit flat and hard, the kind that usually results in a one-bounce four or a flat six. However, Varma, patrolling the fence, had other plans.

Varma timed his jump to perfection, leaping high to his left to pluck the ball out of thin air just inches from the rope. The catch was a testament to his elite athleticism and spatial awareness, ending Suryavanshi’s cameo and providing MI with a desperate breakthrough. Though Suryavanshi walked off distraught, he had already propelled RR to a commanding 80/1 in under five overs.

Despite Varma’s heroics, Rajasthan Royals posted a mammoth 150/3 in their allotted 11 overs, operating at a staggering run rate of 13.63. The protagonist was Yashasvi Jaiswal, who remained unbeaten on 77 from just 32 balls. Jaiswal’s innings was a masterclass in clean hitting, featuring 6 fours and 10 sixes. He reached his half-century in just 23 balls, effectively neutralizing Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar. Contributions from Riyan Parag (20 off 10) ensured MI faced a daunting target of 151.

In response, Mumbai Indians’ chase never found its rhythm. The rain-slicked outfield and a disciplined RR bowling attack proved too much. Jofra Archer set the tone by removing Ryan Rickelton in the first over, and Sandeep Sharma followed up by trapping Rohit Sharma (5) LBW.

The MI middle order collapsed under the pressure of the mounting required rate. Impact player Sherfane Rutherford showed some fight with a brisk 25 off 8 balls, including three sixes, but he found no support. Ravi Bishnoi, brought in as an Impact Sub, dismantled the middle order with figures of 2/25, claiming the crucial wickets of Varma and Hardik Pandya. Mumbai eventually finished on 123/9, falling 27 runs short. Jaiswal was rightfully named Player of the Match for a performance that keeps RR at the top of the table.
