Top 3 lowest totals for Afghanistan in Test cricket

Afghanistan’s journey in Test cricket has featured several memorable moments, historic victories, and impressive individual performances. Since receiving Test status in 2017, the Asian side has steadily grown in the longest format despite facing some of the strongest teams in world cricket.

However, like every emerging Test nation, Afghanistan has also endured a few difficult outings with the bat. Their most challenging performances have notably come against India, whose world-class bowling attacks have repeatedly exposed the visitors under testing conditions. Following their collapse for 112 in the second innings of the one-off Test in Mullanpur in 2026, Afghanistan now occupy all three spots on the list of their lowest totals in Test cricket history.

3 lowest totals for Afghanistan in Test cricket

3. 112 vs India, Mullanpur, 2026

Afghanistan recorded their third-lowest Test total when they were bowled out for 112 in the second innings of the one-off Test against India at Mullanpur. Asked to follow on after conceding a massive first-innings deficit, the visitors attempted an aggressive approach but failed to build substantial partnerships.

Sediqullah Atal top-scored with 42, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz provided some attacking intent with 24. However, India’s spin trio proved too strong. Washington Sundar led the charge with figures of 4/36, while Kuldeep Yadav and debutant Manav Suthar chipped in with 6/33 in the first innings. Afghanistan were eventually dismissed in 35.5 overs as India completed a dominant innings-and-300-run victory.

2. 109 vs India, Bengaluru, 2018

Afghanistan’s second-lowest Test total came during their historic debut Test match against India in Bengaluru in June 2018. Facing a formidable Indian attack led by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma, the newcomers struggled to cope with the pressure after being asked to follow on.

Despite a fighting 24 from Mohammad Nabi, Afghanistan never managed to recover from early setbacks. The Indian bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings, with Ashwin taking four wickets and Ravindra Jadeja claiming two wickets. Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 109, sealing an innings defeat in what remains one of the shortest completed Test matches in modern cricket.

1. 103 vs India, Bengaluru, 2018

The lowest total in Afghanistan’s Test history remains the 103 they were bundled out for during the first innings of their maiden Test match against India in Bengaluru. After India piled up 474 in the first innings, Afghanistan found themselves under immense scoreboard pressure.

Only Hashmatullah Shahidi managed to offer meaningful resistance with a gritty 36, while the rest of the batting lineup struggled against India’s quality spin attack. Jadeja starred with figures of 4/17, while Umesh Yadav finished with 3/26. Afghanistan were dismissed in just 38.4 overs, marking a difficult introduction to Test cricket against one of the strongest teams in the world.
