Prithvi Shaw has roared back to form in grand style, smashing a breathtaking double century for Maharashtra in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025-26 group match against Chandigarh, and it came at record-breaking speed at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh.
The move from Mumbai to Maharashtra seems to have revived Prithvi Shaw’s career, as he hammered a blazing 222 off just 156 balls against Chandigarh in the second-round match. After being bowled out for only eight, Shaw came out firing on all cylinders in the second innings.

Only Ravi Shastri’s 123-ball double century from the 1984-85 season against Baroda remains the fastest double century in Ranji Trophy history. Prithvi Shaw’s knock was pure dominance, featuring 29 boundaries and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 142 against Chandigarh.
Shaw’s timing, placement, and aggressive intent reflected the fearless stroke-maker who single-handedly tore apart Chandigarh’s bowling attack. With this incredible innings, Shaw joins an elite list alongside Virender Sehwag as only the second Indian to score multiple double centuries in first-class cricket within 200 balls.

Sehwag achieved the feat of smacking double centuries within 200 balls thrice in Test cricket for India. However, the fastest first-class double ton by an Indian still belongs to Hyderabad’s Tanmay Agarwal, who achieved the feat in 119 balls earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Prithvi Shaw’s record-breaking innings also ended his 20-month century drought, having last hit for Mumbai in February 2024. After falling for a duck in his opening game for Maharashtra against Kerala, Shaw’s explosive comeback is a statement that his hunger, power, and flair are very much alive, and made a strong case for his India comeback.

Once hailed as Indian cricket’s next big superstar after his stunning debut in 2018, Shaw’s career has seen more turbulence than success in recent years, and the latest incident added fuel to the fire.
Musheer Khan and Prithvi Shaw’s history
During a Ranji Trophy warm-up game, the Maharashtra batter found himself in the middle of a heated altercation with his former Mumbai teammate Musheer Khan. The situation unfolded right after Shaw’s dismissal, when tempers flared between the two.
They exchanged heated words as Shaw walked back towards the pavilion, visibly agitated. Things quickly escalated when Shaw, in a moment of frustration, appeared to toss his bat in the direction of Musheer, shocking everyone on the field. The umpire immediately intervened to calm the situation and prevent it from spiraling out of control.
It was another chapter in Shaw’s long list of controversies both on and off the field. Despite his immense talent and early success, his journey has been marred with disciplinary issues, inconsistent performances, and off-field distractions.
