Depth Scoring Comes Through in Blackhawks 4-0 Shutout Over the Mammoth – The Hockey Writers –

The Chicago Blackhawks finally got a win after losing two in a row following the Olympic break. After two tough losses, a 4-0 shutout over the Utah Mammoth (Mar. 1) was even that much more special. The third game was the charm, and there were lots of highlights, and even a few milestones, in this contest.

Let’s get to the highlights and takeaways from the big shutout win.

Blackhawks’ Power Play Scores (Again)

Despite two previous losses, this was the third game in a row the Hawks were able to convert on the power play. Against the Predators (Feb. 26) it was Tyler Bertuzzi who scored, and Connor Bedard added a power play goal against the Colorado Avalanche (Feb. 28). In this contest, Teuvo Teravainen did the honors.

As you can see, Bertuzzi earned an assist with the takeaway, and then Teravainen finished the job to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. The goal was scored with less than a minute to go in the first period, sending the Blackhawks into intermission on a high note.

4th Line Converts Twice in 2nd Frame

The underlying statistics actually favored the Mammoth in the second period, as they tried to claw their way back into the game. But the Blackhawks took advantage of their opportunities with two quick goals just 1:28 minutes apart. It started with a goal by Blackhawks’ captain Nick Foligno, which was also his 250th NHL career goal!

The goal was unassisted, but Landon Slaggert applied some good pressure along the boards to help the play along. And bonus points for his big hug afterwards!

Speaking of Slaggert, it was his turn to draw the hugs next, with his third goal of the season. He was scratched the last game in favor of Colton Dach, so this one must’ve felt good.

There wasn’t much on the shot, but it got past Mammoth netminder Karel Vejmelka nonetheless. It just goes to show you that good things happen when you shoot the puck! Oliver Moore and Artyom Levshunov were credited with the assists on Slaggert’s goal.

Teravainen Scores His 2nd Goal With a Shorty

The Blackhawks weren’t done yet. In the third period the Mammoth were on the power play. But defenseman Alex Vlasic corralled the puck and saw some open ice in front of him. He took it into the zone and fed it to Teravainen for his second goal of the evening and his 12th of the season.

Vlasic and Connor Murphy received the assists on the goal.

Teravainen hadn’t scored since Jan. 27, a span of six games, while Foligno hadn’t scored since Jan. 15 and Slaggert since Jan. 7. After the last contest the night before versus the Avalanche, Foligno actually talked about how somebody needed to score besides the usual suspects of Bedard and Bertuzzi. That depth scoring was certainly on display for the Blackhawks in this contest.

By the way, this was the Blackhawks’ fifth shorthanded goal of the season. They also currently lead the league on the penalty kill, with an 88.5% success rate. They went 2-for-2 on the PK in this game.

Soderblom Earns 1st Career Shutout

Arvid Soderblom was in net on this night since Spencer Knight played the night before. He stopped 22-of-22 shots, including 11 high danger chances, for the first shutout of his NHL career.

Soderblom hadn’t played since Jan. 29, a span of more than a month, but he indicated that wasn’t an issue. After all, as a backup goalie it’s his job to be ready when called upon. It was Soderblom’s 18th game of the season and 104th of his NHL career. A well deserved shutout win for the 26-year-old.

Other Blackhawks Notes From Win Over Mammoth

  • Forward Frank Nazar has been struggling to produce of late, but he did win 7-of-14 faceoffs (50%) on this night while most of his teammate really struggled at the dot. Oh, and Bedard ended up winning 7-of-12 for a 58% success rate. It was also Nazar’s 100th NHL game. I sure does seem like he’s been playing longer than that. There’s still plenty of time for Nazar to bounce back and start producing.
  • Head coach Jeff Blashill tweaked the lines a little bit for this game. He moved Ryan Donato up to the second line and Moore to the fourth line. It seems to have benefited both lines; Moore earned a primary assist and his line scored two goals. In the meantime, according to Natural Stat Trick, the Donato-Nazar-Teravainen line was up on their opponent for a team best 5-4 in shots on goal and 14-12 in shot attempts in 8:40 minutes of ice time.
  • Defenseman Levshunov seems to be bouncing back after being scratched the last three games before the break. He registered an assist, three shots on goal, five shot attempts, two hits and two blocked shots in 17:04 minutes of ice time. He seems to be gaining his confidence back and balancing playing good defense with also contributing on offense.
  • D-man Kevin Korchinski played in the last two contests, as Sam Rinzel was under the weather. He only played 8:24 minutes in the last game, as Blashill was attempting to shelter him and not put too much on his plate. Korchinski did play 10:27 minutes in this contest, and he contributed one shot on goal. It will be interesting to see if Korchinski gets more opportunities and playing time moving forward.

The Blackhawks next face Jonathan Toews and the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, Mar. 3, before heading home to host the Vancouver Canucks on Friday, Mar. 6. It will be their first home game since Feb. 2, when they beat the San Jose Sharks 6-3. Coincidentally, that was also their last victory before this one.

Hopefully the Blackhawks can carry the momentum from this win into their next contests.
