Vancouver Canucks Look To Have a New Practice Facility – The Hockey Writers – Vancouver Canucks

The day Vancouver Canucks fans and players have been waiting for may be coming soon. With a recent report from Irfaan Gaffar of CanucksArmy, the Canucks and the City of Vancouver are close to an agreement on a new practice facility. Gaffar is reporting that sources have told him that both sides are working towards building a new facility at Britannia Ice Rink, just a 10-minute drive away from Rogers Arena.

The new facility will reportedly include a state-of-the-art gym, an off-ice training facility, a lounge, and a locker room. If this agreement comes to fruition, this will be a monumental day for the Canucks organization, as they have been without their own personal practice arena and facility since 2010.

Why Is This Important?

It has been an overarching issue for the past 15 years that the Canucks have not had a practice facility that they themselves own. The team has practiced on the campus of the University of British Columbia. Although a very good place for a team to practice, the Canucks are guests at that facility and have no control over what times are available for them to train.

This issue has become a big deal, as the Canucks are currently one of two NHL franchises without a sanctioned practice facility and will eventually become the only one once the Calgary Flames’ new arena and practice arena are finished in 2027. Outgoing players even spoke about their frustrations with not having a practice rink when they were in Vancouver.

When Arturs Silovs joined the Pittsburgh Penguins at the start of this season, he spoke about how nice it is to have a practice rink in Pittsburgh as opposed to Vancouver. “We didn’t have a practice rink in Vancouver,” said Silovs to reporters in Pittsburgh. “We skated at the university. Here, it’s like, there’s your own locker room; you don’t have to move your things all the time. You can skate and do your stuff to improve. I think it’s a huge bonus for the team.”

With this issue now looking to be solved in the near future, the Canucks organization can finally put this problem to rest, and the team will benefit because of it. Now, Vancouver can run practices the way they want and not with the constraints that have been put on by the UBC rink. Britannia Rink will have multiple different sheets of ice that will all be at the Canucks’ disposal during their training periods. If head coach Adam Foote or whoever is the coach at the time of the finished product wishes to use multiple different pads of ice to work on special teams or different alignments, that will be an option for them.

How Will This All Work?

As of right now, there is still much more work to be done on this agreement, but the main framework looks to be done by both the city and the organization. Some things still need to be finalized, and more will be released about that in the coming months. After that framework agreement, there are still more hoops to jump through for the Canucks.

The proposed new practice facility will be a part of a larger-scale renovation of the area that the city of Vancouver has been looking at refurbishing for many years. The grounds themselves have several different buildings, including Britannia Community Centre, which is the proposed new Canucks facility, along with schools, a pool, a library, and arts spaces. Many people in the Vancouver area believe that this rink will be one of many different additions to the Britannia site as they look to add more modern spaces to the area.

A giant hoop that still needs to be jumped through revolves around the ownership of the land in question. The school board owns 70% of the land, and the city owns the other 30%. The land is also managed by the park board, the school board, and a separate nonprofit organization.

Another problem that will need to be solved will be the location of the rink and whether or not the original rink will be torn down and built at a different location in the Britannia site, or whether the rink will simply be refurbished and stay at the same location. Even with the framework agreement looking to be done between the city and the Canucks, there are still many steps to go through before shovels even get into the ground on this new practice facility.

Although there is still more work to be done on this project, this is great news for the Canucks if everything goes through, as it looks like it will. A practice rink will do wonders for the organization and will not have them as the only team without one. The team will benefit from the rink, and we could see more success from the franchise because of it.
