The Vancouver Canucks are hopeful to have a GM named by the Draft Lottery
Sekeres and Price: Darren Dreger said that the Vancouver Canucks hope to have a general manager in place by the draft lottery, to fully take part in the draft process.
“Well, the hope is that they get something done around the draft lottery (May 5th), and there’s reason behind that. I mean, you’re talking about a relatively small window of influence and impact here, right? On an organization, especially one like the Vancouver Canucks, given their position in the draft and all of that.
So, how good would it be if your new head of hockey operations, or in this case, the general manager, can participate in all scouting conversations leading up to the draft. And then he can quickly go through that crash course with the amateur scouts and everybody involved in that process with the Canucks, so that he is educated and feels part of a very important day, days of decision-making on the draft floor.
Now, you know, it’s a decentralized draft, so you’re not going to have all of your hockey operations crew assembled in Buffalo. But the hope, the expectation, the target, is to have that GM in place as early as the draft lottery.”

It sounds like Francesco Aquilini will be the one deciding who will be the next Vancouver Canucks GM
Sekeres and Price: Vancouver Canucks chairman Francesco Aquilini will be the one who ultimately decides who the next manager of the Canucks is.
“The ultimate hire of a new general manager, I believe, will be made by Francesco Aquilini.
Now, that’s not to say that Rutherford isn’t going to have input. Of course, he’s having, you know, he’s had input hourly in this process, including, you know, compiling the list of candidates there already in the interview process.
But my understanding is that they’re going to going, to go through the initial interviewing phase, and then they’re going to cut that list pretty quickly. And could be involved in in-person meetings with the shortlist of candidates as early as next week.
NHL Rumors: Nashville Predators, and the St. Louis Blues
So that will be the input and the influence of Jim Rutherford. But again, as I said, given the uncertainty of Rutherford’s future, it’ll be up to Francesco Aquilini, I’m told, to make that call as to who the next GM of the Canucks is.”
