Get ready for blazing tactics and electrifying swindles! The next installment of the Chess.com Community Championships is coming with the speediest of variants. The Chess.com Hyperbullet Championship takes place from June 18 to 19 and features a $2,500 prize fund.Â
Hyperbullet is what happens when you crunch all the excitement of a chess game into a fraction of a minute. With such extreme time constraints, players must rely on their instincts and cunning to outwit their opponents. Below is a video of GM Eric Hansen playing a few games of hyperbullet:
The event kicks off with a one-day shortened qualifier schedule on June 18. Each of the eight qualifiers is a 30-minute arena with a 30-second time control. Anyone can join the action by checking the qualifier schedule below and clicking the Join button.Â
The winner of each qualifier then moves on to the final, taking place on June 19. The final is a double-elimination knockout bracket, also with a 30-second time control, where each match features a 20-minute match clock format.
In 2025, GM Andrew Tang successfully defended his title by tearing through an intimidating field. Tang had to overcome fierce players like GMs Sergei Zhigalko, Oleksandr Bortnyk, and Andy Woodward before finally facing hyperbullet specialist Daniel Naroditsky in the final. Tang eventually edged Naroditsky out with an 11.5-9.5 score to defend his crown.
