MLC 2026: Fans erupt as Colin Munro and Jason Holder power LA Knight Riders to thrilling win over San Francisco Unicorns

The opening match for both teams in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 produced an entertaining contest in Dallas as the Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) edged past the San Francisco Unicorns (SAF) by seven wickets in a rain-shortened 14-over encounter. Chasing a challenging target of 151, LAKR rode on a brilliant unbeaten knock from Colin Munro and a game-changing late cameo from Jason Holder to get over the line with two balls to spare.

Earlier, a sensational half-century from young South African batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius had helped the Unicorns post a competitive total. Still, it ultimately proved insufficient against a determined Knight Riders batting lineup.

The Knight Riders got off to a flying start thanks to Munro and Andre Fletcher. The opening pair added 70 runs in just six overs, putting immediate pressure on the Unicorns’ bowling attack. Fletcher played an aggressive hand of 34 before departing, while Munro continued to control the chase with a composed yet attacking innings. The left-hander remained unbeaten on 64 off just 40 deliveries, finding boundaries at crucial moments and ensuring the required run rate never spiraled out of control.

However, the chase became tense when LAKR still needed 52 runs from the final four overs. The turning point arrived in the 11th over when Haris Rauf came under attack. Newly arrived Holder launched a stunning counterattack, smashing two sixes and a four, while Munro chipped in with a boundary as the over yielded 23 runs.

The momentum swing reduced the equation dramatically and allowed the Knight Riders to cruise towards the target. Holder’s quickfire cameo proved decisive as LAKR completed the chase with seven wickets in hand to begin their campaign on a winning note.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius shines in vain despite strong start from San Francisco Unicorns

After being asked to bat first, San Francisco Unicorns were powered by a sensational innings from Pretorius. The youngster dominated the powerplay and raced to 58 off just 28 deliveries, helping his side reach 48 without loss inside the revised powerplay. Supported by Matthew Short’s 30, the Unicorns looked set for a total well beyond 160 when they reached 123/3 after ten overs. However, the Knight Riders bowlers staged an impressive comeback during the death overs.

Carmi le Roux, Andre Russell, Holder and Shadley van Schalkwyk combined brilliantly, conceding only 27 runs across the final four overs. Their disciplined effort prevented the Unicorns from fully capitalizing on the platform created by Pretorius. Despite posting 150/7, San Francisco were unable to contain Munro and Holder during the chase. The victory gave the Knight Riders a perfect start to their MLC 2026 campaign, while the Unicorns were left ruing missed opportunities in the closing stages of both innings.
