Depot After Dark: Steelers Pass Rush Workout, Tom Arth Interview, Sauce’s Real Age

A Steelers Depot daily segment. A quick hit of some Pittsburgh Steelers-related stories that may not require a complete article, but nuggets worth mentioning and passing on to you guys.

Your Depot After Dark for June 20.

Pass Rush Workout

Several Pittsburgh Steelers starters were hard at work refining their pass rush moves during summer break. Cam Heyward, Nick Herbig, and Keeanu Benton were filmed working with pass rush coach Dez Walker.

The three went through bags, working on their hand placement and punch, along with footwork, while going through the bags. Heyward continues refining his spin move, which he occasionally busts out to surprise offensive linemen.

Last year, the trio combined for 16.5 sacks a year ago. Herbig will look to earn his $100 million contract, Benton will aim to build on his breakout sack campaign, and Heyward will try to defy the odds with another strong season.

Tom Arth Interview

Quarterbacks Coach Tom Arth sat down with Steelers.com’s Teresa Varley as the site continues its spotlight on the coaching staff. Arth is one of just two returning positional coaches and offers key continuity for the team’s quarterbacks.

“Coaching the quarterback specifically at this level, that requires a really cool, calm, even-keeled demeanor,” Arth told Varley of his coaching style. “I try to be that for the quarterbacks because that position is such a cerebral position. It’s not about riding the wave of the highs and lows of the emotions of the game. It’s about staying consistent and living in the moment. I try to be that for the guys that I have the opportunity to coach.”

Arth will play a key role in developing young quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar.

Sauce’s Real Age

An interesting one here. The Athletic’s James Boyd shared that Indianapolis Colts CB Sauce Gardner is not 25 years old, as widely believed. He is a year younger at 24.

Popular resources like Wikipedia and Pro Football Reference had Gardner born in August 2000. In fact, he was born in 2001. It seems most outlets have corrected the error. It’s not entirely clear how the confusion came to be in the first place, other than one site listing him as being born in 2000 and everyone else copying it.

Pittsburgh plays Indianapolis in Week 5, on October 11th. By then, Gardner will actually be 25.
