The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback room looked set for 2026 after Aaron Rodgers rejoined them. In fact, it seems like they have too many signal callers, with the team unlikely to carry four on their 53-man roster. However, that isn’t stopping speculation that the Steelers could select quarterback Brendan Sorsby in the supplemental draft.
While Sorsby is very talented, he also comes with a ton of baggage.
“I think we just stay as far away from it as possible,” former Steelers linebacker Vince Williams said recently on Steelers Nation Radio. “We’re having a great offseason right now. The only drama that we have in Steeler Nation we’re talking about football drama, just trying to win football games, and I think we should keep it that way.
“We don’t need a media circus surrounding us. We’ve got a brand-new head coach. We’ve got a lot of stuff that we’ve got to deal with right now. I don’t think we need any other distractions besides what we have going on.”
There are pros and cons to the Steelers drafting Sorsby. He’s trying to make the jump to the NFL after he got caught up in a gambling scandal that included betting on his own team. Before that, though, he had a chance to be one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 draft. Therefore, the reward could outweigh the risk with him.
And the Steelers aren’t new to drama. They’ve experienced a lot of it over the years, especially when dealing with players like Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell.
However, that was with Mike Tomlin as their head coach. He stepped down this offseason, and Pittsburgh hired Mike McCarthy to replace him. McCarthy almost completely overhauled the Steelers’ coaching staff, which means they have more moving parts this offseason. Therefore, adding Sorsby might not be the best idea.
Still, McCarthy is hardly new to coaching. This is his third time being an NFL head coach. He’s got a lot of experience, especially when it comes to working with quarterbacks. He’s coached the likes of Joe Montana, Brett Favre, and Aaron Rodgers and could be the kind of steady presence that could bring the best out of Sorsby.
It all depends on how the Steelers feel about Sorsby’s gambling issues, and also how they feel about their other young quarterbacks. It would be hard for them to keep Rodgers, Sorsby, Will Howard, and Drew Allar this year. Williams might have the right idea. The Steelers’ quarterback room is already crowded enough.
