NHL Rumors: There Could Be a Domino Effect for All the Big Trades That Are Happening

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio Morning Skate with Scott Laughlin and Gord Stellick. There, he was asked about the domino effect of a player like Brady Tkachuk getting traded. Are more teams trying to find out what their top stars are thinking?

NHL Rumors: Zach Whitecloud, Mason Marchment, A.J. Greer, and the Nashville Predators

Gord Stellick: “We used to call it white noise, but I think Quinn Hughes showed, because it’s not white noise, and it’s become a symphony, really. So, now the next dominos, I don’t know how white the noise is for Auston Matthews, Connor Hellebuyck, I mean, Dylan Larkin, we know because it’s out there, but just interesting about those is stuff quietly going on behind the scenes. Like we find out now it did with Brady Tkachuk?”

Dave Pagnotta: “Yeah, and trying to get that order of business out of the way for teams with a lot of their stars. If there’s an idea or the notion that hey, these guys aren’t going to be long-term fixtures on a team, you have to be proactive and see if you can maximize your return. And depending on what that is, if you can make, like in the perfect world, you swap out talent for talent, and star for star, and you go from there.

NHL Rumors: Mavrik Bourque, Jason Robertson, Mason McTavish, and the Buffalo Sabres

But if it is a different type of package, like in this particular case, where you’re dealing with futures, and again, a heck of a return. Like the 9th overall pick (now belonging to San Jose), the 25th overall pick, another first, and a second down the road, is not anything to bat an eye to.

I mean is a significant return for the Sens, but clearly for a team that wants to be in a position to compete for the playoffs and, and beyond they’re going to look to see, all right, we’ve got these assets now, how do we turn those into things that are going to give us immediate help, and I think that’s something that they’re looking at.

I think Jason Robertson in Dallas is a top target for the Ottawa Senators. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to end up pulling it off, but because of Dallas, they’re trying to get him. They’re trying to get Robertson to sign. He’s a restricted free agent July 1. If he gets there, they can certainly have those discussions, and he may be the primary target for the Senators, but Dallas is in a position where they can look to see how we can maximize our return and keep us in Stanley Cup contender status.

The Latest on Toronto Maple Leafs, Coaching and Auston Matthews

Whether that’s moving out for futures and flipping it, or just making the old hockey trade. The Sens may look at him and go, yeah, we want this guy, but Dallas can turn around and say, well, look, we want to sign him, if we can’t, we don’t have to necessarily move him to you.

We can explore our options as well. So there’s a little bit of a domino effect that may occur here after, after this one, and of course, we know Dylan Larkin is waiting for a similar thing. So this could be a pretty entertaining week here with the level of talent that could potentially be flipped over these next 5,6,7 days.”
