The United States secured a spot in the World Cup knockout rounds at home after going 2-1-0 through Group D and shutting out Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 32. Belgium went 1-0-2 in Group G before defeating Senegal 3-2 in extra time in the round of 32. These two squads have faced off once before in a World Cup, with Belgium taking the match 2-1 in extra time in the round of 16 in 2014.
