England’s Quansah suspended 2 World Cup games for red card

FIFA has suspended England defender Jarell Quansah for two matches after he was sent off in the second half of the Three Lions’ 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16, according to GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs.

Quansah received a red card after a VAR review of his tackle on Jesus Gallardo. Red cards carry an automatic one-match suspension at the World Cup, but England’s Football Association was reportedly considering appealing it.

Quansah is now expected to miss Saturday’s match versus Norway in the quarterfinals and possibly the semifinals if England advances.

Red-card appeals have become one of the 2026 World Cup’s hottest topics after United States striker Folarin Balogun had his one-match ban lifted for the team’s last-16 bout against Belgium. U.S. President Donald Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to request a review of Balogun’s red card.

Balogun played 89 minutes in the United States’ 4-1 loss to Belgium.

On Wednesday, FIFA denied the French Football Federation’s appeal over star winger Michael Olise’s yellow card. Olise, who was booked in the round of 16 against Paraguay, would be banned from a potential semifinal game if he receives another yellow during France’s next match against Morocco on Thursday.
