First Weekend Of Training Camp: Steelers Friday Night Five Questions

Happy Friday, and I hope yinz are doing well.

Training camp is finally underway and plenty of storylines are developing around the Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster. Mike McCarthy’s practices certainly have a different feel to them, one that’s very upbeat and specific. He’s putting his stamp on this version of the Steelers without live tackling, but it’s been a very upbeat start to camp.

The quarterback situation is still being sorted out, and Mason Rudolph is currently taking QB2 snaps. Howard and Allar are developing behind him, while Roman Wilson has quickly emerged as a receiver, which is critically important for him.

On the other side of the ball, Asante Samuel Jr. has been absolutely stellar to start camp after returning on a one-year deal last offseason.

There’s still much more ahead. The final 90 percent of camp remains, as well as preseason games. But for now, football is finally back. The Steelers are hard at work in Latrobe preparing for the new season.

Q1: In their prime, which running back are you taking: Le’Veon Bell, Jerome Bettis, or Franco Harris?

Steelers Depot respondents are taking Jerome Bettis in his prime over Franco Harris or Le’Veon Bell. Rock3373 had difficulty choosing: “I’m torn between all three. I can’t honestly come up with a definitive answer, so I’m going off the board and picking single-season team record holder Barry Foster.”

Q2: Who was the better third-round pick: Cam Sutton or Diontae Johnson?

Respondents picked Diontae Johnson over Cam Sutton as the better Steelers third-round pick by a 6:1 ratio. Wes explained, “Johnson. (Although he still likes to run in the opposite direction of the first down marker, Johnson played more than Cam and was more productive for a longer period of time.)”

Q3: What is your biggest concern about the Steelers roster heading into camp?

Linebackers are the biggest concern among respondents going into camp. Quarterback was very close as a concern, with Steven Small saying, “Old Man Rodgers continuing to regress and costing us another mediocre season where we’re no closer to an answer at QB.”

Q4: Which part of the roster are you most confident in heading into camp?

Respondents named several different position groups they were most confident in. There was a three-way tie between the edge rushers, the secondary and the wide receivers. The roster may be stronger than we realize.

Q5: If you had to choose one, are you keeping Will Howard or Mason Rudolph?

At the moment, respondents would keep Mason Rudolph over Will Howard if forced to make an immediate decision. Mostly because Howard has not had the opportunity to show his ability to compete in the NFL yet. Ted Webb says, “Mason – we know what he is, maybe he could get us out of a game or 2 if we need him this year. Howard and Allar are both unproven, hate having 2 young guys as our backups if Aaron goes down for a few games probably so does our chances with the young guys. Hoping Allen or Howard which ever one makes a solid jump or a move in front of the other one.”
