Manchester United remain interested in strengthening their midfield with Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, but an increasingly crowded transfer race threatens to complicate their plans.
Michael Carrick needs another midfielder following Casemiro’s departure, while Manuel Ugarte’s injury has reduced his options in the deeper positions.
United have already added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos during a productive window, but Wharton would offer something different: a natural left-footed controller capable of progressing possession and setting the tempo.
The major obstacle is Palace’s enormous valuation, particularly with Chelsea becoming more aggressive and Real Madrid continuing to monitor developments.

Sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside that Man United’s interest remains active, although Crystal Palace’s demand of around €100 million has prevented negotiations from accelerating.
Real Madrid have also monitored Wharton for some time but currently view other midfield profiles as more immediate priorities.
Chelsea represent the biggest danger. Recent reports suggest that the Blues have resumed discussions with Palace and that Wharton remains a priority for Xabi Alonso.
Palace are demanding €100 million, while Chelsea need to reduce their squad before making a major move.
United’s need remains clear. Carrick has already strengthened midfield with Tielemans and Santos, but another addition is still being considered following Casemiro’s exit and Ugarte’s injury.
Carrick & co cannot waste their time in Wharton pursuit
Wharton would make considerable sense at Old Trafford. He can receive the ball under pressure, dictate possession from deep and break opposition lines with progressive passing.
Those qualities could complement the more athletic Santos while allowing Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo greater freedom further forward.
The problem is value. Paying close to €100 million after already investing heavily in midfield would represent a huge commitment, especially when United still want reinforcements at striker and left-back.
Chelsea’s renewed interest also gives Palace little reason to reduce their demands.
Real Madrid’s presence creates another complication. Even if they are not prioritising Wharton now, a late move from the Bernabéu could immediately change the player’s options and trigger an auction.
United should remain involved but establish a strict financial limit. Wharton is an excellent long-term fit and could eventually become the controller Carrick’s midfield lacks, but Man United cannot allow Chelsea or Madrid to force them into paying an unrealistic premium.
