New Documentary Series ‘Grandmasters’ Gets Tribeca Film Festival Premiere

Grandmasters, a new docuseries featuring GMs Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, and Hans Niemann, along with other top figures in the chess world, will premiere as an Official Selection at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, with its debut screening scheduled for June 7.

If you thought chess had already reached peak mainstream, think again. Grandmasters, produced by Boardwalk Pictures, is poised to give the game its own Drive to Survive moment, bringing viewers inside top-level chess through the players, their emotions, and the drama behind the scenes.

Directed by Liza Mandelup, the series follows many of the biggest names in modern chess, including Carlsen, So, and Niemann, along with IMs Danny Rensch and Levy Rozman, and Freestyle Chess CEO Jan Henric Buettner. A central storyline explores the growing tension between Freestyle Chess and the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The official synopsis reads:

The once esoteric and uninspired world of competitive chess is thrown into turmoil when an eccentric German entrepreneur enlists reigning champion Magnus Carlsen to launch a new league that aims to revolutionize the game, challenge the sport’s governing body, and “make chess cool.” As the chess world fractures, Grandmasters like Wesley So—Magnus’s soft-spoken rival whose quiet brilliance contrasts with the sport’s emerging showbiz era—and Hans Niemann, a rebellious American prodigy with raw talent and controversy, find themselves at the center of this upheaval.

Grandmasters chronicles the rivalries, reinventions, and personal battles shaping the modern pursuit of greatness in the game of kings.

The official program for the film festival was announced Tuesday, and shows that the 56-minute first episode will premiere on June 7. General tickets for individuals are available from next week, April 28.

Tribeca is regarded as one of the world’s premier film festivals, and known for showcasing quality storytelling across film and television. It often serves as a launchpad for projects that break into the cultural mainstream.

Chess has been featured there before—most notably with the 2016 documentary Magnus, directed by Benjamin Ree, which chronicled the rise of Carlsen. A decade later, the game returns to Tribeca with a broader, more contemporary lens.

Grandmasters is the third chess-themed project reaching wider audiences this year. Netflix’s Untold: Chess Mates was released on April 7, two months after Queen of Chess, featuring GM Judit Polgar.

Meanwhile, the Carlsen-Niemann saga is also headed to Hollywood, with production company A24 developing a feature film titled Checkmate, which will dramatize the controversy. A release date has yet to be announced, but shooting is expected to start this summer.
