Who can stop Russell getting his championship charge back on track in Canada?

Mercedes brought their first in-season upgrade for 2026 to Montreal – and the early signs were very encouraging as George Russell hit the ground running to pip his team mate Kimi Antonelli to Sprint pole. But can he continue that form and get his championship back on track?

That was a heck of a performance from Russell to take pole, eh?

You’re not wrong. Russell arrived in Montreal on the backfoot having watched his sophomore team mate Antonelli win the last three Grands Prix on the bounce to open up a 20-point lead in the championship and knowing he needed a big result in Canada.

The omens were good, as the Briton was stunning on his way to victory at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve last year, and while he was pipped to the quickest time by Antonelli in the one and only practice session (as it’s a Sprint weekend), he got the job done when it mattered in Sprint Qualifying.
