Domato Peko Explains What Separates Keeanu Benton From Other Defensive Linemen

Keeanu Benton might not have the same role with the Pittsburgh Steelers as he’s previously held. But that doesn’t mean the new coaching staff doesn’t see big things in store for the former second-round pick.

Speaking to the media earlier this week, defensive line coach Domato Peko explained how Benton’s quickness separates him from other defensive linemen.

“I feel like he’s super stout and strong at the point of attack. But what really separates him is his quickness. He has really good lateral quickness. And as far as going from [B gap] to [A gap] or A gap to B gap, he’s really good in his movements. So that’s kind of the things that separate him from some of our other guys,” Peko said via the team’s YouTube channel.

This year is pivotal for Benton. Not only is it a contract year, but Benton might play more of a traditional defensive end role other than a pure nose tackle role. Benton has somewhat struggled at the nose, and moving him around could play to his strengths.

His athleticism has always been a standout trait, but it hasn’t always led to success. Benton needs to expand his pass-rush repertoire and do a better job getting off blocks. When he does make plays though, his speed and athleticism are big reasons why.

A new coaching staff could get the most out of Benton. He’s been a reliable starter, but he hasn’t taken that next step in his development yet to become a true difference-maker. The hope is that will change this year, and Peko clearly sees a lot in Benton that he thinks can make him a positive contributor for the Steelers this season.

Benton should be penciled in as a Week 1 starter, even with the Steelers adding depth to their defensive line. While he could be pushed by someone like Sebastian Joseph-Day, Benton has all the traits to succeed and could earn himself a nice payday with a good performance this year.

That is, of course, if he doesn’t sign a new contract prior to the season. But with multiple extension-eligible players on defense, including Joey Porter Jr. and Nick Herbig, the Steelers could wait and see how Benton performs in 2026.

It’s a good sign that Peko sees a lot in Benton. Peko could be the catalyst for Benton having a career year.
