Depot After Dark: Frazier Recognized By Execs, Arnold Works Out For Steelers Opponent, McCurley’s Inspiration

A Steelers Depot daily segment. A quick hit of some Pittsburgh Steelers-related stories that may not require a complete article, but nuggets worth mentioning and passing on to you guys.

Your Depot After Dark for July 12.

FRAZIER RECOGNIZED IN ESPN LIST

Although Pittsburgh Steelers C Zach Frazier didn’t crack the top 10 or honorable mentions in ESPN’s list of their top 10 interior offensive linemen, he still received votes. NFL coaches, scouts, and executives vote on players for this list. Frazier was among eight iOLs who received votes despite not making the list.

Had the list been purely the 10 best centers, Frazier likely would’ve made it. However, with guards included, he found himself on the outside looking in. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Frazier finds himself in the top 10 sooner rather than later, though. He’s been one of the best centers in the league over two seasons and remains an ascending talent whom ESPN’s Ben Solak believes could eventually become one of the NFL’s best centers.

It’s a good sign that Frazier is mentioned among the top talents. He should be a key piece for the Steelers this season.

TERRION ARNOLD WORKS OUT FOR TEXANS

Despite facing up to life in prison, the Houston Texans worked out former first-round pick Terrion Arnold, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported on Friday.

Arnold is facing felony charges of kidnapping and armed robbery following a February incident in Largo, FL. He was released by the Detroit Lions earlier this month but is still receiving interest from NFL teams.

He will likely be disciplined under the NFL’s personal conduct policy, but there is an outside chance that Arnold could play some games this season if he is signed. The Texans play the Steelers in Week 13, so a potential signing with Houston could be worth monitoring. He would join a loaded Houston secondary that includes Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lassiter, and Jalen Pitre.

SCOTT MCCURLEY’S COACHING INSPIRATION

In a recent article on the team’s website, Pittsburgh Steelers ILB coach Scott McCurley told Teresa Varley his two coaching inspirations. McCurley listed Bob Razzano, his coach from Mohawk High School in Bessemer, PA, and Larry Coyer, his defensive coordinator and linebackers coach during his time as a player at Pitt.

“They were really good teachers, good energy. They knew how to push you and get the most out of you.”

Razzano is in the Geneva College Athletics Hall of Fame for his work as a linebacker. He passed his knowledge to McCurley, helping turn him into a D1 linebacker and now an NFL coach. Coyer had a long coaching career, serving as the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator from 2009-2011 with multiple other NFL stops.

It’s always interesting to see who inspired coaches to be the leaders they’ve developed into. McCurley certainly had two solid mentors as he ascended as a player and a coach to where he is today.
