The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL) is returning for its fourth season with GM Magnus Carlsen headlining the field in Bengaluru, India. With a stellar lineup of the strongest players in the game teaming up in exhilarating matchups, the fourth season is set to be one of the most exciting yet.
Amateurs and professionals once more have the chance to enter the world stage through the GCL Contenders, a series of online open qualifiers. The GCL Contenders runs from August 7 to August 22, with qualifiers held at different times to accommodate players across multiple time zones. Last year, GM Jose Martinez, IM Mai Narva, and IM Faustino Oro prevailed in the Finals of the GCL Contenders, rising above more than 20,000 other participants to earn their spot in the GCL. This year, players will again battle for three spots in the main event, with one man, one woman, and one junior qualifying.

GCL Contenders Format & Dates
This year’s GCL Contenders features three sections: men, women, and juniors, matching the GCL’s team composition. The event features a $12,000 prize fund, with Chess.com Diamond Memberships also going to the winner of each arena. The top player from each section qualifies for GCL’s main event in Bengaluru, India.
The GCL Contenders begins with the GCL Opens, a series of three-hour arenas with a 5+0 time control, open to all non-titled players. Each section will have six arenas, with the top two players from each advancing.
The next stage is the GCL Contender Titled Swiss, where titled players join those who advanced from the previous phase to compete in a seven-round Swiss with a 10+0 time control. The top player from each Swiss becomes a GCL Ambassador and wins a trip to Bengaluru to attend the GCL. The top six from each Swiss earn cash prizes and become eligible to play in the GCL Players Swiss.
In the GCL Players Swiss, all sections are combined into a single event, with all Ambassadors and GCL players eligible to join. Players compete in a seven-round Swiss with a 10+0 time control for cash prizes.

What Is The Global Chess League?
The GCL is the world’s first major official franchise-style chess league. Teams compete in a series of rapid games, where wins with Black award more points than with White, inviting players to take risks and injecting drama into the competition. The event attracts the game’s biggest legends every year, with players such as Carlsen, GMs Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Viswanathan Anand, Hou Yifan, and Ju Wenjun among previous participants.
