Brendon McCullum opens up on Test sacking, blames poor results against India and Australia


England’s white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum has finally broken his silence after being sacked as the head coach in the Test format. Brendon McCullum admitted that England’s poor performances in Tests led to his exit and said he fully understands why the decision was taken.

McCullum also said sorry to England fans for not delivering the results they expected. He admitted that the team could not win the biggest Test series during his time as coach and said the disappointing performances left him with no excuses. Speaking before England’s three-match ODI series opener against India, Brendon McCullum revealed that he was informed by the England management that they wanted a new coach for the Test team. Amid this, Jacob Bethell to open as England announce playing XI for 1st ODI vs India; Tom Banton dropped.

He admitted that he was very disappointed when he got the news, but he respected the decision because he knows international cricket is all about results. The coach also felt it is now the right time for someone else to take charge of the Test team and try to take England forward.

He said at the pre-match press conference: “I’ve got a tap on the shoulder. Obviously, I was disappointed initially. Well, I am disappointed, not just initially. But at the same time, I fully respect the decision. We’re in a results business, and our results weren’t good enough. Fundamentally, it’s time for someone else to have a go.”

McCullum also looked back on his four years as England’s Test coach. He said it was one of the proudest moments of his cricket career. Out of more than two decades in the game as a player and coach, he described his time with England as one of the biggest highlights of his life.

He said he always felt grateful for the opportunity to coach England. His main goal was to help the team play better cricket, improve the players, and make England stronger in Test matches. He also thanked all the players, coaches, and support staff for their hard work and commitment during his stint as the coach.

McCullum further said, “I feel over the course of 20-odd years in this sport, the last four years have been possibly the biggest highlight that I’ve had. I’ve always been incredibly grateful for the opportunity. I’ve felt humbled to be in that position. I just wanted to try and get the best outcome for English cricket for all those that support the team.”

However, England’s white-ball coach admitted that the team failed to win the Ashes series in Australia and also against India, for which he apologized to the English fans.

McCullum signed off by saying, “Fundamentally, we just weren’t quite able to win those big series. The series against India and the series against Australia are the two marquee series. We weren’t able to get the results in those. For that, I guess I can only say sorry.”
